Everly songs

McCartney has always been respectful of the songs he's given to other artists.

Wish he'd given some of the better ones to the EBs. I'm sure they would've done a great job with World Without Love or Woman, to name but two.

Nope, haven't played it.

I have, however played last month's song. I think both King & Goffin got the gist of the Everly-Bryant songs of those days [Crying in the Rain & No one Can Make...]; the guitar chord breaks, the harmony changes and so on. It's interesting to hear how they tried out several arrangements [horns & different rhythms] and finally decided to go for the guitar chord breaks [closer to Since You Broke My Heart or Till I Kissed You] that enhance the harmony.

As I mentioned before, I wish they'd recorded some of the better McCartney songs.

With the passage of time I tend to agree with you Ricardo. However, it was exhilarating to hear it on the radio first time as I cannot recall whether I had heard that they had actually made an album, even though it was hinted at. Interesting that they sort of dropped the song in more recent years on tour and reverted to Bowling Green and Green River, possibly because those who went along were interested more in nostalgia
My favourite from the EB 84 album is actually First in Line written by Paul Kennerley who at some point was married to Emmylou Harris and wrote a lot of good stuff around that time. Those two albums made by Dave Edmunds were fuller arrangements than hitherto but it was to be expected
LYRICS (lyrics and music by Paul McCartney)

"On The Wings Of A Nightingale"

When I love,
I get a feeling like I'm travelling through the sky.
On the wings of a nightingale.

As I ride,
My head is reeling but I don't even wonder why
On the wings of a nightingale I'll fly

High above land and sea
I'll be thinking of you and me.
Couldn't ask for a better place to be
Oh, I can feel something happening
Oh, I can feel something happening
Oh, I can feel something happening to me

So hold my hand,
I got a feeling that the journey has just begun.
On the wings of a nightingale.

And if you like,
we'll fly together to the land of eternal sun
On the wings of a nightingale of love

High above land and sea
I'll be thinking of you and me.
Couldn't ask for a better place to be
Oh, I can feel something happening
Oh, I can feel something happening
Oh, I can feel something happening to me

When I love,
I get a feeling like I'm travelling through the sky,
On the wings of a nightingale
On the wings of a nightingale
On the wings of a nightingale fly
On the wings of a nightingale

Fan comments:
"Great song by the boys! Even greater of Sir Paul to write it for them! I was lucky enough to see them in concert in 1986! I highly recommend EB84!"

"Wow, another fantastic song from Paul McCartney! And the Everly brothers, as always, sound magnificent"

It had totally slipped my mind that 'Asleep' was on the flip side.
A fine song indeed Chris but it does not fit in anywhere. Not a throwback to nostalgic times and definitely not of interest in the 80s. Truly a song for enthusiasts of the Brothers

The Spongetones are inspired by 60's Rock and greatly admired The Beatles

Here is their cover of "On the Wings of a Nightingale":

Fan Comment:
"Maybe this song is one of those rare songs that everyone can do justice to. This is a great cover and I don't often say that. There are exceptions, of course, and this appears to be one. I like this one just as much as The Everly Brothers. I like on this version that there appears to be more than two people singing, and they all harmonize wonderfully." proudkansan08

The Spongetones, formed in 1979, are an American power pop band from Charlotte, North Carolina. They formed from a desire to play Beatles and other 60's music they grew up with. Very much influenced by the British Invasion, the Spongetones carried on the musical genre through acclaimed original songwriting, jangle pop riffs, and lilting vocals of Beatlesque quality.

In his 2007 book, Shake Some Action, John M. Borack rated the Beat and Torn album at number 25 of his Top 200 Power Pop Albums of all time, comparing the album to early Beatles and Searchers, calling the album "simply wonderful." Rolling Stone gave Beat Music a 3-1/2 star review." (wikipedia)

The Everly Brothers' seem to always exude such exuberance when doing live performances of this song!
Their band, consisting here of 5 musicians, two of whom are Pete Wingfield (playing dual keyboards) and the very excellent guitarist, Albert Lee, enhance and drive the Everlys' energy!

This link is interesting, the singer does sound a little like John Lennon, upon reading the info now I know why he is singing 2 songs connected to Paul and John of the "Beatles"

Apple Jam showcases "Help Me to Help Myself," an unfinished John Lennon song, and "On the Wings of a Nightingale," a Paul McCartney song he never released. The songs are performed in styles from various Beatle eras (1964-71). Alan White (Yes, John Lennon, George Harrison) has lent his legendary drumming talents to the project. Proceeds from the EP are being shared with Seattle Anesthesia Outreach to improve hospital care in Ethiopia.
