I like to think Phil and Buddy are having the best time together now.

I have just seen 2 other similar photos from this occasion.(Buddy Holly and the Everly Brothers - images- via bing.) My friend, a photographer right here now, says that the angle with which the original was photographed (taking a picture of a picture) would affect the result. And of course, the age ...

This photo suffers from too much retouching (that's its flaw). It does not need more.

This photo has not been digitally manipulated in any way shape or form, according to the digital expert in photography. That photo is not a digital image. It's an old black and white photo from film of almost 60 years ago.

I never said anything about this being a digital photo or that this was digital manipulation of this photo. This photo was taken decades before the technique existed. I worked in communications and with photographers for years before the technique became the norm, with rolls of camera film and actua...

"Retouching" back then involved a lot of work, and anything beyond fixing of minor imperfections (skin, hair), was very detailed. delicate work utilizing a blade, like a surgeon's scalpel, which had to be done directly on the negative. Celebrities might request this for cover shots, etc. But this ph...

It is my professional opinion on this photo, and I have a right to state it. It is not evident to me that this is a photo of a photo. I do not get that at all, from looking at this image. The retouching here is in the face details and the body outlines, with ink on the negative, before printing. It ...

A group of us here at a dinner have read the above comments. Two are professional photographers, and an expert commercial retoucher whose opinions are quite divergent from yours. We all are entitled to our own opinions. So be it. Period end.

Once again Mary, I wish I could be as sure of my opinions as you are of yours...

In my humble personal opinion the original photos were pretty “grainy”[1] to begin with. Please look at these other images, obviously from the same photo session:

PS:

Photograph retouching was NOT usually done with ink on the negative:

I too have worked closely with image processing @ the National University of Mexico, UNAM. [A short version of my résumé is available under Ricardo Delgado Rangel @ LinkedIn] ...

I stand by my opinion. It is obvious to me, in my experience, that the old, very grainy photo has been manually retouched. Ricardo, the other shot from the same session in your link above proves it. Compare the two:

Photos were manipulated through...

Mary,

My point about the other photo:

http://knoxfocus.com/2014/11/everly-brothers-knoxv...

is that the type of digital degradation it exhibits is not "Gaussian", but "salt & pepper" noise, two totally different sorts of mathematical functions and, therefore, of visual effects. This is why, of course,...

Gosh, I apologize for opening up this can of worms! Sincerely!

I will say one more thing, one more time, and then it is my right and my duty to shut the topic down, since I opened it up. I still believe this old b/w photo had some post-exposure work done, and most likely has some of the other techni...

I will continue to post this one and any other poor quality photos, such as the one folded as if from a wallet, all photos of the EB's are to be enjoyed no matter what condition.
